Is the Golden Retriever the right dog for you?

Are you thinking of adding a Golden Retriever to your family?  The following are some things for you to consider.

A Golden is a very social breed that is a loving, sweet, affectionate and devoted member of the family.  The Golden lives to please us. They make us laugh and provide us with companionship that is unrivaled.

In addition to all their wonderful qualities, a Golden Retriever has many needs that must be met. If you’re considering a Golden Retriever, it is important that you understand all their needs and are totally capable and willing to meet them. A Golden Retriever is a perfect family pet only and when these needs are met.

Golden Retrievers Need Constant Attention & Affection

A Golden that is left to spend days and nights alone in a backyard, basement or laundry room is a very unhappy Golden. A Golden has very strong social needs and they are not shy about expressing them. Expect your Golden to express his need for your attention and physical closeness.

A Golden excluded from family interaction will bark, dig and become overly excited by the slightest big of attention. And some, even with daily interaction, can be a little pushy about receiving attention. Expect your Golden to follow you throughout the house, to nudge you with their nose for a pat on the head or to drop a toy at your feet when he wants to play. There are even some who feel they are large lap dogs. A Golden will not be satisfied with anything less than being a part of the family.

Golden Retrievers need supervised exercise with you on a daily basis

Be prepared to exercise your Golden 30-45 min. every day … RAIN or SHINE! Leaving your Golden out in the backyard to play on his own just won’t do. Before you know it, you’ll find he/she barking or scratching at your door with a look that says “Please come out and play me!” In addition, a golden left unattended in the backyard is an invitation to trouble. They’ll chew your flowers and it’s guaranteed that they’ll find a perfect digging spot. Never leave your Golden tied up outdoors as this is extremely dangerous. A Golden that is not exercised regularly will have a lot of pent up energy and become restless. Taking daily walks and playing a game of fetch is a wonderful way for you and your Golden to build a bonding relationship. Regular exercise is also very important to your Golden’s health as it helps to keep them at their ideal weight.
